About Us
Well the name says it, our family’ business began on 30/12/03 with the aim of providing an authentic Indian experience of food, culture and hospitality. Sarto Nachatter a local teacher (in Coffs Harbour) of many years and her 4 children first opened An Indian Affair at 23 Orlando street Coffs Harbour .
Very quickly the friendly atmosphere of the “little house” and its fresh cuisine became a household name in Coffs Harbour. The Business received the prestigious "Sunnys Business Award" and its success enabled it to expand to Armidale in 2006.
Sarto’s son Sahir has always had an active interest in preparing food (maybe as a result of having 3 sisters who cant cater for his fussy eating habits). After travelling to Indian in 2006 to learn more about the art of real home style cooking and the use of fresh spices and produce in Punjab Sahir took over the cooking and management of his own Indian Affair Armidale. This business has catered for the many and varied tastes of Armidale’s academic, agricultural ,and business population serving food at the premises in Rusden Street as well as participating in the many local festivals and markets including the Wool Expo.
Our original recipes have been slightly modified by Sahir to accommodate healthy options such as using water to make sauces instead of oil in every dish .His knowledge of spices enables him to design dishes to suit the customer whether mild butter chicken or vindaloo hot. He also prides himself in buying everything local such as fresh beef from Uralla and Dorrigo onions. Future plans include expanding the variety of local wines available being served in the restaurant and catering for more special occasions such as weddings.
The business has been a Mecca for training local youth who want to learn about Indian food and culture. Sahir was born in Australia but has enjoyed travelling to India and sharing his culture with young people from Armidale. Staff are friendly and endeavour to exude an Indian atmosphere in a friendly and knowledgeable manner.
An Indian Affair further expanded to Yamba on the mid north coast in 2008. Unfortunately Coffs Harbour was forced to close in 2009 due to flood damage. An Indian Affair Yamba is also licenced and has a beautiful outdoor dining area above the main street with the same delicious food being served 6nights a week.
